Who's who
Meet the people that contribute to the Sanctuary
Neil O'May
A keen diver and naturalist, Neil has lived in Queensferry all his life, and has always been interested in wildlife and ecology. With his enthusiasm and flare for photography and some 25 years diving experience, he has even created his own underwater cameraman service specialising in the macro marine environment… (Click here for an example of his work).
A word form Neil :-
“I am one of the founding members of the Hawarden Bee Sanctuary, this is a subject I am very passionate about and although I am new to ‘bee keeping’, I have followed for years the general decline of some of our natural wildlife species, and in particular the plight of our bees… So now I have decided to act and try to help in some small way, after all, if we help the pollinators the knock on effect is massive to all the other wildlife that depends on wild seeds and fruits, if you just think of birds alone, think how many would suffer if there were no berries on the hedges!”
Simon Fielding
With his love of exotic creatures, Simon has a sizable collection of insects and creatures as varied as praying mantis to rainforest frogs and skinks, in some cases even managing to breed and rear young, Simon is a keen supporter of the home grown, don’t import mind-set, believing we should nurture a love of the wild but not at their suffering.
A word form Simon :-
“I’m really excited to be part of this project, particularly as when i was a boy I had the opportunity to help with a colony of honey bees at school, and that particular experience has stayed with me all my life, so now I can combine my passion and experience I have gained with my exotic creatures, with the love of our home grown bees, and help the sanctuary grow from strength to strength.”
All over approach
More than just one species
When we understand the idea for conservation, we know a balanced approach is the best solution, what we may think of as a problem may be part of the natural ecosystem…
Just like a balanced environment, the sanctuary will be part of a bigger picture, offering guidance and working with lots of different organisations and groups, whilst doing the practical stuff too, so here are a few other places to get information.
